Trout Fishing

Is Trout Fishing Hard?

Trout fishing does not have to be hard to learn. When learning how to trout fish as a beginner, this may seem like a daunting hobby to conquer. That couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the concept of fishing for trout is really simple.

There are multiple ways to catch trout but it’s recommended that you focus on mastering one of these methods.

  • Bait Fishing
  • Lure Fishing
  • Fly Fishing

Is Bait Fishing Hard?

The simplest and most common of these methods is bait fishing from the bank. When trout fishing lakes it is common to use both live bait and fish dough baits. Live bait is the most natural and oftentimes the most productive way of fishing for trout. You can fish live bait with a bobber or weight near the bottom.

When bait fishing be sure to use the right fishing rig setup for best results. Personally, I like the Ugly Stik GX2 for a beginner setup. You can read our full Ugly Stik GX2 review for more information.

How to Catch Trout Fishing Lures

Catching trout while fishing with lures can be slightly more challenging at times. On the other hand trout, lures can also outproduce standard bait rigs. Fishing lures in rivers is a great way to catch unsuspecting trout lying at the end of a gentle run.

One of the best trout fishing lures around is the inline spinner. These simple but effective fishing lures have produced hundreds of trout in my life. They can be fished in small streams, rivers, lakes, and even trout ponds. If this style of fishing interests you, check out “17 Tips when Fishing Trout Spinners” article to get a head start.

Is Fly Fishing Hard?

Fly fishing is the hardest of the three methods listed above. It takes patience and dedication to learn this style of trout fishing but the reward is the greatest as well. Catching even the smallest of trout in an isolated stream creates an adrenaline rush like no other.

Fly fishing can be done in small streams, rivers, and lakes (Stillwater). Fly fishing in lakes is a great place to start. Casting from a float tube or small boat will reduce the number of entanglements from brush typically found onshore.

Are Trout Difficult to Catch?

This is really a difficult question to answer because there are so many variables. Depending on geographical areas, weather, water temperatures, barometric pressure, and lunar tables are just a few factors to consider when trout fishing. To give yourself the best odds of catching trout try fishing stocked trout ponds. These fish are isolated in a small area and are eager for a delicious meal such as a worm.

Wild Trout is undoubtedly the most difficult trout to catch. The reason for this is that they typically have not seen artificial baits, lures or even fishing flies before. If the fisherman does not present the bait or lure correctly the chances of startling and scaring off the trout is extremely high.
